Why you bring your own keys

Bonfire never holds a provider account on your behalf. You bring your Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek, or Gemini key or auth. Every token you use goes directly from your provider to you, at their rack rate.

We built Bonfire this way because we watched the AI coding category reprice itself four times in 12 months — driven by token-margin pressure. Bonfire is structurally immune to that failure mode.

$12 covers our engineering and the incremental value Pro adds — local vault, marketplace access, Pro themes. Bonfire has no token margin to hide behind. When these numbers change, we will tell you why.

Frequent questions

What do I actually pay for with my own key?: Your LLM provider charges you per token at their published rate. A typical Bonfire pipeline run uses 30,000-50,000 tokens. At Anthropic Sonnet rates, that is roughly $0.13-$0.28 per run — paid to your provider, not to Bonfire.
Can I try Bonfire without a key?: Yes. Demo pipelines run without a key and show you the agent choreography, stage flow, and receipt output. Real dispatches need a key.
Why is the free tier actually free?: Because Bonfire has no inference subsidy to protect. Your tokens go to your provider, not to us. Our free tier has no caps, no nags, and no upgrade pressure because it has no marginal per-user operating overhead to offset.
When does the Vault roll out for Pro?: After the founder's dogfood evaluation confirms it earns its keep. Not on a calendar date. The vault works today in the founder's personal forge. When the experience is real, it ships.
What does the Enterprise adoption fee cover?: Initial deployment, custom agent axiom tuning (8-12 engineering hours), initial vault ingestion, team training, and one quarterly check-in. Published at $7,500 because we do not hide numbers behind “Contact Sales.”
